There is no question that the national economy is suffering through one of the worst recessions in decades. By fostering a diversified economy with a broad base of many small businesses, Mayor Barrett has built a strong foundation for the North Adams economy. Our city is poised for growth as the economy recovers. Even in these difficult times the private sector continues to invest millions of dollars in the North Adams economy.
Mayor Barrett was one of the first mayors in the country to understand the importance of the arts as an economic development catalyst. The results and long-term promise are undeniable. He also understands the importance of a community's image when pursuing economic development. With the leadership of Mayor Barrett, North Adams has achieved national recognition as a city on the move.

Mayor John Barrett believes that there is no better investment in the future of North Adams than to provide our children an excellent education.
Mayor Barrett has been a tireless advocate for our children's education. The result: two new schools, innovative programs and laptop computers for students in grades six to eight.
Class size is one of John Barrett's top priorities, and today our public schools have one of the lowest pupil-to-teacher ratios in the Commonwealth. While most school districts are reducing their curriculum, North Adams is expanding course offerings. Ours is also one of the few school systems that charges no activity fees. We can all take pride in our school system.

When Mayor Barrett entered office the city had been in a cash deficit position for several years as a result of the devastating impact of Proposition 2-1/2. Since then, by improving efficiency, eliminating non-essential costs and by consolidating services, North Adams has ended each fiscal year in the black. The result is that our residential tax bills are among the lowest in the state. And not only are tax bills low, but our schools, roads, street lighting, recreational facilities and community activities are among the best in ?the Commonwealth.
Mayor Barrett knows that being a tough financial manager doesn't always make a lot of friends among the special interests. But he also knows that every taxpayer in North Adams benefits from his scrutiny and strong oversight of the city budget. In an era when most cities are struggling just to survive, North Adams, with the proven leadership of Mayor Barrett, has become a model of successful management.
